How My Pug Saved My Life
I know you are probably thinking,”how did a Pug save this guys life”? It all started in 2005 when I was a bartender. I was in love with my girlfriend and we were planning our wedding. We wanted to get married and have children. We wanted the picket fence and the house in the suburbs. We wanted all the things that life had to offer. Then one day it all started to fall apart. I found out that my girlfriend of six years was cheating on me. When I confronted her she admitted it, and that was the most devastating thing that had ever happened to me. She moved out and suddenly I was all alone. I was depressed and I started drinking heavily to ease the pain. My drive to be successful was completely gone and I spent my time feeling sorry for myself. I had always dreamed of owning my own business and I just didn’t have the drive to chase that dream any longer.
About two months after I had broken things off with my girlfriend, I was talking to a co-worker who was very upset. She moved into an apartment with her boyfriend and couldn’t keep the new dog she had just gotten. I asked her what kind of dog it was and she said it was a Pug. I hadn’t had a dog since I was little and I was a little apprehensive about offering my home. After a few minutes of pondering I told her that I would take the dog and help her out. She was so happy and we agreed to meet the next day to make the exchange. When I arrived at her apartment she brought out this little runt Pug with the smushed face and bulging eyes. I was a little scared of how ugly he was at first. He was shaking like a leaf and as soon as I held him he started licking my face. I was in love and I felt my spirit being lifted by this little creature. His energy and joy for life brought me some sort of comfort that I had not felt in a long time. My depression was so dark and deep and it was like it was gone in a flash. Somehow this little Pug had saved my life. I took him home and he bounced all over the place in my house. Smelling and licking everything to get a feel for his new home.
The first few nights were rough because he was crated when I went to bed. Every night I could hear him whimpering and crying and it broke my heart. Finally I decided to let him out of the crate for the night and he tried and tried to get on the bed with me. So, I picked him up and put him on the bed because I felt like he just wanted to be next to me. From that day eleven years ago until now he sleeps right beside me. His name is Levi and he has become my best friend. If he had not rescued me and saved my life, I really believe that I would not have done the things I have without him. He made me want to live a better life for him and myself. He made me care about something other than all the negativity that had surrounded my world. We built a routine of walks in the morning and night and we go everywhere together. I would recommend anyone who is going through a low point in their life, to go out and get a shelter dog or cat. Unconditional love is what you receive in return and that is something you will always cherish. I have started my own business which is thriving. I come home every day to a Pug named Levi that loves to see me every day. One day he will be gone and I will be heart broken because he really has saved my life.
